Video | Professional! How many steps are needed to go from feces to clinical prescriptions?

[Editor's Note] "World Science" collaborates with the "ThePaper" platform, with funding from the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission (Project No.: 22DZ2304300), to report on the popularization of achievements recognized by national and Shanghai municipal science and technology awards.

The first-class project in science and technology progress awarded by Shanghai in 2021, titled "Creation of a Classification Model for Intestinal Microbiome Diseases and Clinical Application of Microbiome Transplantation Treatment," was led by Professor Qin Huanlong from the Tenth People’s Hospital affiliated with Tongji University.

“Fecal Microbiota Transplantation” (FMT) involves transplanting functional bacteria from healthy human feces into the intestines of patients, thereby regulating the balance of the intestinal microecological system and reconstructing the intestinal microbiome, with the aim of preventing and treating both intestinal and extra-intestinal diseases. This therapy is currently used in the clinical treatment of over 80 diseases and has shown remarkable effectiveness, particularly in patients for whom traditional treatment options have failed (such as recurrent Clostridium difficile infections). It is considered a safe and effective new technique.
