What is science? How did science develop? What kind of science should be developed?

The discipline that explores and answers the above questions and is dedicated to studying the development laws of science and scientific activities, thereby promoting the formulation of science and technology policies, the improvement of scientific research management, and the harmonious development of science and technology and society is called "Science of Science" Science).

Shanghai is an important starting point for Chinese science. In 1980, the Shanghai Institute of Science was established, becoming the earliest scientific research institute in China and has always been the center of scientific research in China.

On the morning of May 30, 2024, the "Science Shanghai Initiative" was released.

The Shanghai Institute of Science and other participating guests jointly released the "Shanghai Initiative for Science", which aims to promote science to keep pace with the times, provide political advice and benefit the world, and cooperate and share.

The initiative states, “ Scientific knowledge is knowledge shared by mankind, and scientific undertakings are the common undertaking of mankind. Therefore, it is crucial to develop scientific knowledge to promote broad participation and in-depth exchanges among countries. We call for more complete open sharing and deeper exchanges. global cooperation."

The initiative calls for the development of science that will benefit the world through consultation. Support decision-makers to follow scientific laws when promoting the development of scientific and technological innovation and more effectively improve the efficiency of scientific and technological innovation.

Researcher Liu Dongmei, chairman of the conference and secretary of the Party Committee of the China Academy of Science and Technology for Development Strategies, elaborated on the close connection between scientific and technological innovation and new productivity in his keynote speech.

The conference also previewed the monograph to be released by the research team of the Shanghai Institute of Science - "The Road to Innovation in Big Countries and Big Cities", as well as the new book - "The Road to Innovation in Great Powers and Big Cities" edited by Alan Irwin, professor of the Organization Department of Copenhagen Business School. This is an important moment for global science.

In recent years, many countries have begun to pay more attention to science. A number of projects dedicated to funding science have been established one after another; numerous science forums and conferences have appeared one after another; and a number of new institutions dedicated to the study of science have been announced.

Scientology is a science about science (referring to science and technology in a broad sense here). It is committed to studying the development laws of science and scientific activities, thereby promoting the formulation of science and technology policies, the improvement of scientific research management, and the harmonious development of science and technology and society.

The recent rapid development of science has highlighted people's extensive and deep concerns about answering a series of questions such as what science is, what kind of science to develop, how to develop science, and who will develop science in the current era.

The re-emergence of science in the new era is first attributed to changes in science and technology and the development of new research methods. The in-depth integration of the new generation of information technology, energy, materials and biotechnology has promoted the accelerated development of a new round of scientific and technological changes, and has given rise to new scientific paradigms and scientific research organization models; scientific research activities are increasingly digitalized, and artificial intelligence is developing with each passing day. Promote the emergence of new scientific methodologies.

The re-emergence of science in the new era also stems from the more complex interaction between science and the external environment. The increasingly complex relationship between science and politics, economy, culture and other fields has triggered a series of new questions that urgently need to be answered by science.

Shanghai is an important starting point for Chinese science. In 1980, the Shanghai Institute of Science was established, becoming the earliest scientific research institute in China and has always been the center of scientific research in China. Today, the science conference organized by the Shanghai Institute of Science provides a very important opportunity to re-examine science. Science has emerged since the last century. After continuous differentiation and integration, it is now entering a new period of growth. Taking this opportunity, we and the guests attending the meeting jointly issued:

l Develop science that keeps pace with the times. The world is facing a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation. Developing science that can be used to explain, accelerate and standardize the development of science and technology is an important responsibility of science today.

l Develop the science of advising on government affairs to benefit the world. Give full play to the mission of scientific support for decision-making, support decision-makers to follow scientific laws when promoting the development of scientific and technological innovation, more effectively improve the efficiency of scientific and technological innovation, and bring greater benefits to human society.

l Develop cooperative and shared science. Scientific knowledge is knowledge shared by mankind, and scientific undertakings are common undertakings of mankind. Therefore, it is crucial to develop scientific knowledge to promote broad participation and in-depth exchanges among countries. We call for greater openness and sharing and for deeper international cooperation.

Since its birth, science has been interdisciplinary, cross-field, and cross-cultural research. It is research jointly promoted by scientists and policymakers. We call on all relevant parties, including the government, science and technology circles, industry circles, think tanks, etc., to work together to build The global science community jointly promotes the rapid innovative development of science.

    Science will be better tomorrow!
