New discovery at Zhejiang Shangshan cultural site: 100,000 years of evolution of rice from wild to domesticated

A Chinese scientific research team recently conducted research on the origin of rice at the Shangshan cultural site in Zhejiang Province using methods such as phytolith microfossil analysis, revealing the 100,000-year continuous evolution history of rice from wild to domesticated.

The research results show that as early as about 100,000 years ago, wild rice was distributed in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River; about 24,000 years ago, humans began to collect and use wild rice; about 13,000 years ago, humans intentionally or unintentionally cultivated wild rice before domestication; about 11,000 years ago, rice farming originated in East Asia.

This study further confirms that my country is the origin of rice in the world, which helps to better understand the development of human society and the origin of agricultural civilization. The relevant results were published online in the international academic journal Science on May 24.
