2023 Future Science Awards Announced: He Yuming, Sun Jian, Ren Shaoqing, Zhang Xiangyu Win Mathematics and Computer Science Awards

Winners of the 2023 Future Science Prize-Mathematics and Computer Science Prize: He Yuming, Sun Jian, Ren Shaoqing, Zhang Xiangyu.

At 11 a.m. on August 16, the winners of the 2023 Future Science Awards-Mathematics and Computer Science Awards were announced.

He Yuming, Sun Jian, Ren Shaoqing, and Zhang Xiangyu won this award in recognition of their fundamental contributions to artificial intelligence by proposing deep residual learning. The four will equally share a total of about 7.17 million yuan (equivalent to 1 million US dollars) in prize money.

The award-winning work was completed at Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing from 2012 to 2016. This research work is considered a milestone breakthrough in the field of computer vision recognition. At that time, Sun Jian and He Yuming were researchers at Microsoft Research Asia, and Zhang Xiangyu from Xi'an Jiaotong University and Ren Shaoqing from the University of Science and Technology of China were interns in their team.

He Yuming, winner of the 2023 Future Science Prize-Mathematics and Computer Science Prize.

He Yuming, Bachelor of Tsinghua University (2007), Ph.D. of Chinese University of Hong Kong (2011); After graduating from the Ph.D., he worked in Microsoft Research Asia as a researcher, and joined the US technology company Facebook AI Research (FAIR) in 2016 to continue research on computer vision .

Sun Jian, winner of the 2023 Future Science Prize-Mathematics and Computer Science Prize.

Sun Jian, Bachelor (1997) and Ph.D. (2003) from Xi'an Jiaotong University. However, Sun Jian passed away in the early morning of June 14, 2022. On the same day, Megvii Technology, an artificial intelligence company based in Shanghai, issued an obituary stating that Sun Jian, chief scientist of Megvii and president of Megvii Research Institute, died of a sudden illness.

Ren Shaoqing, winner of the 2023 Future Science Prize-Mathematics and Computer Science Prize.

Ren Shaoqing, Bachelor of University of Science and Technology of China (2011), Ph.D. of University of Science and Technology of China and Microsoft Research Asia (2016). He used to be the partner and R&D director of Momenta (Beijing Chusuu Technology Co., Ltd.), a Chinese autonomous driving company, and then worked for NIO, a Chinese smart electric vehicle company.

Zhang Xiangyu, winner of the 2023 Future Science Prize-Mathematics and Computer Science Prize.

Zhang Xiangyu, Bachelor of Xi'an Jiaotong University (2012) and Ph.D. of Xi'an Jiaotong University and Microsoft Research Asia (2017). Chief Researcher of Megvii Research Institute, Head of Foundation Model Group.

Deep neural networks have driven the revolution and development of artificial intelligence. Among them, increasing the depth of neural networks is the key to bringing breakthrough progress in many artificial intelligence applications. The award-winning team proposed deep residual learning, which enabled neural networks to reach unprecedented depths and previously difficult-to-achieve capabilities, and contributed to multiple breakthrough results - including AlphaGo, AlphaFold and ChatGPT.

The Future Science Award was established in 2016. The award focuses on original basic scientific research and rewards scientists (not limited by nationality) who have made outstanding scientific achievements in Mainland China (Mainland), Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

Since 2016, the Future Science Prize has selected a number of winners in mathematics and computer science. They are: Xu Chenyang, Lin Benjian (Burn J. Lin), Wang Xiaoyun, Peng Shige, Shi Min (Simon Sze), Mo Yiming (Ngaiming Mok), He Yuming, Sun Jian, Ren Shaoqing, Zhang Xiangyu.
